Retention

Shifting, crowding, rotations, or spacing may occur throughout life regardless of whether orthodontic treatment has been performed. Persistent habits or functional problems such as mouth breathing or finger sucking may contribute to shifting. Retainers are to be worn by all patients after completion of the active phase of orthodontics. These appliances hold the teeth in the final position until the supporting tissue reforms to the new position. Full cooperation with retainer wear is vital. We recommend all patients keep and wear retainers for an extended period of time even after the retention phase of treatment.

We strive to achieve excellent results for all of our patients. While recognizing the benefits of a pleasing smile and healthy teeth, you should also be aware that orthodontics, like any treatment of the body, may have some slight risks or limitations and requires acceptance of responsibility. The most common unfavorable reactions are: Pain and/or discomfort, tooth mobility, and tooth sensitivity.
